Egmont’s crypt

A few days after his tragic death in 1568 Lamoral was buried in the family crypt beneath the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. The count of Egmont had a personal attachment to Zottegem, as his grandfather and his mother already lay buried there. The crypt was forgotten until it was rediscovered in 1804. In 1857 the remains of Lamoral and his wife Sabina Duchess of Bavaria were transported to a new crypt. Do you also want to rediscover the graves? Take the stairs beneath the modern glass dome to see the remains of Lamoral and Sabine. Admire the three heart-shaped leaden boxes that contained the hearts of Lamoral and his sons Philip and Charles. A multimedia screen guides you through the history of Lamoral and his last resting place.
